Gauge of uninterrupted reading time Parents It's useful to know in advance how long an uninterrupted reading of the book takes. (You likely would not start a 15 minute story at bedtime if you wanted a 5 minute one). And since when reading aloud to your child, interspersing reading with discussion can be half the fun for both of you, again it's good to know the length of straight reading aloud time before you start. Librarians and Teachers When you are reading to a group, you will want to know how long reading the book straight through will take so you can judge how much time to leave for discussion; or with a chapter book, how many class or library periods it will take to read, so you can factor in discussion. Your own discussion style may of necessity vary with the group's sizes and ages, and the material. With one group you may like to have hands go up and discussion interspersed with your reading; with another group you may prefer waiting until the end of the book or chapter. Or, you may have developed the style which works best for you in all your reading aloud situations.
